Retirement in the making

I gave a 2 month notice some weeks ago about leaving my position. But I work for a large university so the paperwork and regulations to rehire are complex and tedious. We finally hired my replacement today, and she will start September 14th!! That gives me 6 working days to orient her. That's not going to happen!!! It's not enough. And I had committed to writing and presenting an abstract at an international research conference in October and if I don't work for the university, they won't pay for it. Hmmmm.... So I negotiated with my boss today to get both to happen. I will work for an extra month, but take Leave Without Pay except on days that I'm needed to help the new person. I can set up appointment times for that and not stay for 8 hour days, or I can even assist from home by phone! And get paid. One of the advantages to this is that my medical/dental insurance will be extended another month so I can complete some services I'm starting. Sounds like a decent plan. I can still have time off to take short trips etc. during October. Also, I'm trying not to burn bridges as I might work per diem occasionally to help out. You just never know what the future may bring.

The countdown to retirement started a little prematurely. I only work 3 days a week, and was down to 13 days...now I have to add another 13 at least. Still not bad. Besides it feels better than saying 2 months!

The only down side to this is that flu season will start, and H1N1 is already here. All the college kids will be back in session near the end of September. The elementary aged kids are already back in session and it's starting to spread. We talked at work today about the H1N1 vaccine and I'm not sure if I'm going to take it or not. If we don't we have to wear these fitted respirator masks all of the time. I was hoping to avoid all of this! Well it's only 26 days of it. Good handwashing folks!

You never know what each day will bring.

Smart to not burn bridges. I work for a university also but things are a bit different here. They don't even hire anyone until the person is gone. There is no training the new person. When I hired on I was left on my own for 3 days. Truly self-motivated on the job training!
Don't know about you but I'm not getting a flu shot. I'm far too leery about the quality and safety of the process, especially when I read that they are rushing production of the vaccine. I've only gotten one flu shot in my life and that was when my late husband was going through chemo.
I sound like a right-wing nutjob but I just don't fully trust the government (corporations) any more.

I created my job, so no one showed me! There are clinical responsibilities right away, so she'll need to be taught!

As for the N1H1 vaccine - I don't think I'm getting it although health care workers are in the group that gets them first. I do get the regular ones and will do that. I work in research and am not too excited about getting a flu shot that hasn't been tested more extensively. I'll wear the respirator for a couple of weeks!
